Travel

By plane

All flights to and from Ljubljana are operated through the Jože Pučnik Ljubljana Airport ; 25 km from Ljubljana city centre. The best way to get from Ljubljana Airport to the city is by bus or shuttle service (see below)

There are aslo a few neighbouring airports which might offer better/additional connections:
Graz Airport, Austria (190 km from Ljubljana)
Klagenfurt Airport, Austria: (90 km from Ljubljana)
Zagreb Airport, Croatia (140 km from Ljubljana)
Trieste Airport, Italy (130 km from Ljubljana)
Venice Airport, Italy (230 km from Ljubljana)

Shuttle services can be used to get from some of the listed airports to Ljubljana. The most popular companies include GoOpti, Markun (LJ only), VanCenter, Nomago. Public transport is also available.

By road

Slovenia is well connected by road, and Ljubljana can be easily accessed from  the motorway. Driving on Slovenia’s motorways requires the purchase of a vignette, which come in weekly, monthly, and yearly options. These can be purchased online or from any petrol station before crossing the border into Slovenia..

Ljubljana has a modern and efficient road system, with dense traffic during rush hours (around 7.30-9:00 and 15:00-17:00), and light traffic at most other times of day. The city centre is closed to traffic. Public parking in the city is available but requires payment. Some hotels offer their own garages or parking spaces.

By rail or bus

There are regular train connections to several European countries. For more information about international and local train timetables consult the Slovenian Railways web site.

The Ljubljana Bus Station has regular services to all of Slovenia’s neighbouring countries, as well as to the most popular tourist destinations within the country (Bled and Bohinj, Postojna Cave, the coastal towns of Portorož and Piran). Check here for timetables.

Flixbus and Nomago have recently become popular bus services for international travel to and from Slovenia.

Getting around in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is a rather small city and easy to get around. The public city bus network makes it easy to travel within the city. The city lines connect all districts, and buses run according to regular schedules throughout the day. A smart card, Urbana (also available as mobile app) has to be purchased before using public transport. More information here.

Urbana card can also be used to use the city bike sharing system; BicikeLJ. Getting around by bike is the most efficient and often most pleasent mode of travel in the city.

Ljubljana also has a well organised taxi service; it is not exceedingly expensive. There are fixed spots in the city where taxis are stationed, or they can be ordered by telephone or via mobile apps.
